How functional medicine benefits your mind & body

Functional nutrition is a key component of functional medicine, as both share a holistic, root-cause approach to health. Functional medicine views the body as an interconnected system where imbalances in one area can affect other parts of the body, and it seeks to address these imbalances rather than just treating symptoms.

Here’s how functional nutrition fits within the broader framework of functional medicine:

Personalization: Both functional nutrition and functional medicine recognize that no two individuals are the same. Functional nutrition tailors dietary plans based on a person’s unique biochemistry, genetics, lifestyle, and health history, while functional medicine uses this personalized approach to develop treatment protocols that support overall healing

Root-Cause Focus: Functional medicine practitioners work to identify and address the underlying causes of disease rather than simply managing symptoms. Functional nutrition supports this by using food as medicine to correct nutrient deficiencies, reduce inflammation, and balance body systems such as the gut, hormones, mitochondrial health, and detoxification pathways.

Gut Health: The gut plays a central role in functional medicine because it influences immune function, mental health, and overall well-being. Functional nutrition focuses heavily on improving gut health through tailored diets, probiotic and prebiotic foods, and avoiding triggers like processed foods and allergens to restore balance and support digestive function.

Nutrient Repletion: Functional nutrition plays a role in restoring deficiencies identified through functional medicine testing, such as micronutrient or mineral imbalances. It works alongside functional medicine protocols to replenish depleted stores and promote optimal functioning of bodily systems.

Detoxification Support: Both functional medicine and nutrition emphasize the body’s need to detoxify effectively. Functional nutrition helps by recommending foods and supplements that support the liver and GI tract in safely clearing out toxins and preventing reabsorption.

Lifestyle Integration: Functional nutrition looks at the individual’s lifestyle (stress, sleep, exercise) in conjunction with functional medicine’s broader approach. By recommending dietary changes that support better sleep, hormone regulation, and energy, functional nutrition enhances the effectiveness of a functional medicine treatment plan.

In short, functional nutrition is the nutritional arm of functional medicine, ensuring that dietary choices, supplements, and lifestyle changes are part of a comprehensive approach to healing and promoting long-term health.

Functional Nutrition FAQS

Jumping on a brief call before diving in helps us both to better understand what working together will look like.  You will have a few minutes to tell me a bit about yourself and what you are looking for help with.  I then take a few minutes to briefly describe our practice and field any questions you may have.  From there, if we both feel this is a good fit, I will provide you with booking information and get you set up with an appointment.

We know that cost and coverage are often barriers when it comes to functional medicine and nutrition. That’s why we’ve taken steps to make our care more accessible.

We are proud to be in-network with United Healthcare, Highmark, Optum, and VA Community Care. For all other insurance providers, we are considered out-of-network, but we’re happy to provide you with a superbill you can submit for potential reimbursement.

For those choosing to self-pay or who are out of network for nutrition services:

  • Initial Assessment (75 minutes): $175
  • Follow-up Visits (30 minutes): $70 each

We also accept HSA/FSA cards and credit cards, and offer flexible payment plans, this way finances don’t stand in the way of your health goals.

Our commitment is to provide exceptional, personalized care while making sure cost is never a barrier to receiving quality integrative and functional medicine.

At FLOW Functional Nutrition, we require payment upfront for the initial assessment due to the in-depth nature of root cause medicine. This allows us to dedicate the necessary time to prepare for your unique case before our appointment, including a detailed review of your health history. Following our session, we spend additional time creating personalized recommendations tailored specifically to your needs—no one-size-fits-all protocols here. The upfront payment also ensures your commitment to the process and helps minimize last-minute cancellations, allowing me to reserve time for those who are serious about their health journey.

The initial assessment in my nutrition and functional medicine practice is 60 minutes long to allow for a thorough, in-depth evaluation of your health history, lifestyle, and current concerns. This extended time is essential for uncovering root causes and understanding the complete picture of your health, so I can develop personalized strategies tailored to your needs.

Follow-up appointments, on the other hand, are typically 30 minutes long, as they serve as focused check-ins to monitor progress, adjust recommendations, and ensure you’re on track with your goals

Are you tired with symptom management and the same old dietary advice? Functional nutrition is an integrative and highly personalized approach to nutrition and wellness (health?)  Rather than the traditional calorie counting, meal planning and symptom management, Functional Nutritionists hone in on deeper, more systemic imbalances, which allows them to address the root causes of diseases and optimize health.

Functional Nutrition is integrative and holistic, incorporating each person’s unique genetic variability, biochemical efficiency and environment.  Assessing and treating the person as a whole, rather than seeing them as a cluster of symptoms, allows us to identify and correct imbalances at the root cause.

Unlike most Registered Dieticians whose education focuses a lot on food service and meal planning, a Functional Nutritionist is trained to identify the imbalances and root causes.  Having a deep understanding of how interconnected the human body is, Functional Nutrition and Medicine look at things like your gut/digestive health, mitochondrial dysfunction; the role inflammation plays in your symptoms; sleep; recovery; stress and your own unique relationship with food

Functional Nutrition interventions aim to help restore balance and cellular health by addressing factors such as micronutrient deficiencies, metabolic imbalances, improving daily movement, decreasing stress, increasing healthy sleep, and even cultivating supportive loving relationships.

Unlike conventional medicine which tags you with a diagnosis and focuses on alleviating symptoms, functional medicine seeks to identify the root cause of the symptoms in order to create balance within, overall health and sustainable change.

If you deal with chronic illness or ongoing poor health, has your conventional medicine provider looked into WHY your diagnosis is happening or do they take a more symptom-oriented approach?

If so, you have to ask yourself, how well is this actually working if you’re still suffering with the symptoms?

Dealing with chronic health conditions is burdensome enough, so why waste trying to blow away the smoke when you can put out the fire itself! Getting to the root cause is what functional medicine and nutrition does best.

Many of these issues are influenced by diet and lifestyle.

Taking a Functional Nutrition approach allows us to identify the root cause of these concerns and collaborate to develop a whole person, sustainable approach to achieving health and wellness.

Functional Nutrition fills a gap that is not always adequately addressed OR assessed in conventional medicine, in order to offer a personalized approach to address factors underlying chronic disease and unhealthy aging.

By looking ‘upstream’ at the imbalances influencing symptoms, Functional Nutrition addresses nutrient deficiencies and restores health at a cellular level…..from the inside out.

When you work with me, we go beyond simply addressing symptoms. As a functional medicine nutritionist, my approach is rooted in understanding and addressing the root causes of your health issues, to make lasting change.

Here’s what to expect during your session:

  1. Comprehensive Health Evaluation: Our first step is a detailed review of your health history, lifestyle, and symptoms. This includes examining how different systems in your body are interconnected, as imbalances in one area can often affect another. We’ll discuss factors like digestion, metabolism, stress levels, sleep, brain health, and more to paint a complete picture of your health.
  2. Personalized Plan with Root Cause Focus: We don’t just treat symptoms; we focus on healing your body from the inside out. At FLOW, we will work with you to develop a personalized wellness strategy. This plan may include targeted nutrition protocols, precision supplement recommendations, stress management techniques, and lifestyle enhancements.
  3. Holistic, Collaborative Approach: Throughout our sessions, you’ll receive the ongoing support and education you need to make informed decisions about your health. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions, review your progress, and receive the tools you need to take an active role in your healing journey. Together, we’ll track your progress and adjust your plan as needed, making sure you’re always moving forward.

By addressing the root cause of your health issues with evidence-based care, enhancing communication between your body systems and restoring balance between your body and mind, we’ll help unlock your body’s natural ability to heal and thrive.

Come prepared with your health goals, any relevant medical records, current labwork,  a list of current medications or supplements, and a notebook to capture all the insights from our session. You’ll want to remember everything we discuss!

  1. While everyone’s health journey is different, the most motivated individuals who take ownership of their progress often see the quickest and most significant results. If you’re ready to do the work and stay consistent, you’ll begin to feel improvements within weeks and see lasting changes as we continue to fine-tune your plan together.
  2. The timeline for results depends on your unique health needs, but those who commit to making the necessary changes—putting in the effort and sticking to the plan—tend to see the best results.
